Wireless Device Registration is intended for devices where WPA2-enterprise authentication is not possible, and where the Web Portal, Device Login, or Login API methods do not fit the needs of the intended use of the device. This might include devices which agressively sleep and therefore don't retain a DHCP lease between short periods of use (Ex: Eye-Fi card, TV's, media players, and many sensors).
Wired Device registration is also for single user devices who have a Wired LAWN port available. It is important to note that if you register a device, you are responsible for any and all use (or abuse) of the device.
Wireless Requirements
- Devices must be compatible with GTother, which requires support for WPA2-PSK, and DHCP.
- Devices that support WPA2-Enterprise (802.1x) cannot be registered.
- The Device owner must have a valid GT Account with access to LAWN enabled (all current faculty, staff, and students have access to the LAWN enabled by default).
- Do NOT register devices you are not willing to take complete responsibility for.

Device Registration Process
Wireless Devices
Because this service relies solely on the MAC address of the device, we cannot at this time offer a way for end-users to register their devices directly. Authorized members of the Georgia Tech IT community have access to device registration tools, which will allow them to register a device under the GT Account of the device owner once they have verified that the use of Device Registration is appropriate.
- Faculty and Staff: should contact their Departmental CSR. If the CSR does not have authorization to register devices, a request can be made to support@oit.gatech.edu to enable that authorization.
- Students Living in Residence Halls: should contact the Wreck Techs via their website to request device registration.
- Anyone: can bring their devices to the OIT Technology Support Center (Clough Building Room 215)
Once the device is registered, it is best to turn OFF your device and wait at least 10 minutes before attempting to connect to the GTother SSID. The Pre-shared Key for GTother can be found here.
GTother is composed of multiple networks. Devices will be assigned to one of them depending on its registration status and other properties. Unregistered devices will be assigned to the "Walled Garden" network which has very restricted access - just the LAWN Portal and select other resources to facilitate registration. Registered devices will be assigned to either a privately-addressed or publicly-addressed network depending on options chosen at the time of registration.
Wired Devices
Any authorized LAWN user can register a wired device given the following procedure:
- Make note the wired MAC address of the device.
- Plug the device into the Wired LAWN port.
- Authenticate the device by either opening a web browser and authenticating or using Device Login.
- Once the device is on the network, open a browser to http://portal.lawn.gatech.edu.
- Click "Log In with GT Account" to authenticate to the site.
- Once in the application, a button to "Register This Device" should appear. Click that button.
- The MAC address of your device will be pre-filled. Enter a description, select any desired advanced options, then click "Next".
- Select a registration type - either short-term (24 hours) or long term (4 months). Specific reasons for using one connections means over another are listed on the page.
- Confirm the registration details on the last step, then click "Register Device".
- Once you complete registration, the next time you plug your device into wired LAWN, you should not need to authenticate.
Registration Renewal, Re-registration, and Expiration
Registrations must be renewed by the device owner every four months. This can be done at http://portal.lawn.gatech.edu. An email reminder including this link will be sent to the device owner prior to the expiration of the registration weekly starting one month prior to expiration.
Be aware: The device owner is responsible for any use (or misuse) of any device registered under their account. Devices which have been lost or stolen, transferred, or no longer in use, should be deleted from the device listing at http://portal.lawn.gatech.edu.
